The City of Moorpark is located in southeastern Ventura County, just 50 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The climate of the region is fairly dry, making for comfortable, Mediterranean-like weather. During the summer temperatures range from highs in the 70′s to the rare (and gratefully dry) 100′s. Spring is a favorite time of year for Moorpark residents, with temperatures consistently near perfect. Winters may feel a bit cool for those used to warm places, ranging from the 60′s to mid 70′s. Typically , Moorpark experiences Santa Ana winds during the winter months. These warm winds come up, brining temperatures near the 90′s, providing a few welcome days of balmy summer weather.
The City of Moorpark contracts with the Housing Rights Center (HRC) of Los Angeles to assure fair housing to Ventura County residents. The Moorpark Unified School District (USD) encompasses 6 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, 1 high school, a continuation school and the high school at Moorpark College. Moorpark is well known for the quality of its education. Their Academic Decathlon Team has earned the National Championship Title in 1999 and 2003. Their academic performances also gained Moorpark the State and Division 1 National Championship Titles in 2002. Moorpark Musketeer Football is part of the Marmonte league and frequently competes for the state championship. As you can see, the Moorpark USD is a fine place for those raising children.
Moorpark is home to one of the two Junior colleges in the county. Moorpark College provides an accredited two-year program in a number of fields, including Business, Science, Performing Arts, and Vocational Studies. Moorpark College is unique in offering Exotic Animal Training, being the only Junior College in the state with Exotic Animal program and Management curriculum. Students in this program operate an ever-expanding on-campus zoo facility which is open to the public. Moorpark College’s Physics and Astronomy departments are also open to Ventura County residents. Universities within an easy commute from Moorpark include California Lutheran University, California State University at Northridge (CSUN) and the California State University at Channel Islands.
Parks and Recreations
Moorpark manages 16 public parks which serve the surrounding suburban homes, Schools, and business centers. Arroyo Vista Park, located right below Moorpark High School (home of the Musketeers,) is one of the most popular parks in the city. Moorpark athletics frequently uses their facilities and accommodations. The facilities are open to the public and for after-school programs. Additionally, the city sponsors several public events throughout the year.
Moorpark’s Public transportation system has some 38 stops along 11 routes which run throughout the day. In the summer months, they also provide Beach Bus service to Zuma beach four times a day, with stops at points along the way. Current fares are just $3 round-trip for students and adults, and only $1 for seniors and disabled persons. There’s also a Summer Youth pass available.
The Area Housing Authority administers subsidized housing programs within the City of Moorpark, providing Section-8 vouchers and public housing. The city also contracts to provide housing counseling and advice on tenant/landlord issues within the city.
